31st Conclave • August 16-20, 1969 • Dallas, TX
Great moments from Conclaves past

An important step was taken at the thirty-first Conclave in August 1969, when Frank Ruck, Michigan ’46, was elected assistant grand treasurer during a time when the fraternity was beginning to feel the tremors of indebtedness. Ruck, who had served as treasurer and vice president of financial operations for Chicago Title and Trust, was the perfect man for the job. Other Conclave business included passing of the resolution authorizing chapters to set their own procedures for approving candidates for initiation, thus removing the requirement of a unanimous secret vote. This Conclave marked the beginning of a turbulent time for fraternities. Challenges Sigma Phi Epsilon faced included: the sexual revolution and drug culture, the challenge for fraternities to be “relevant,” and “establishing a direction for SigEp to lead the fraternity world.”
