21st Conclave • September 6-8, 1949 • Chicago, IL
The Hotel La Salle in Chicago hosted the twenty-first SigEp Grand Chapter Conclave from September 6 - 8, 1949. Ninety - nine active chapters were represented as well as fourteen alumni chapters. Expansion policies were in full swing as eighteen new charters in twelve states had been granted since the previous Conclave. The field secretary program was working as Grand Secretary William W. Hindman Jr. informed delegates that each chapter had enjoyed at least two visits per year from himself, his assistants or field secretaries. New SigEp recordings were distributed on new plastic technology called vinylite.
Things were going good for SigEp as founding members Jenkens, Phillips, McCaul, and Carter were in attendance, but Hindman warned chapters to guard against overconfidence because “it is not likely that this abundance of good prospects will continue indefinitely.” He was right, as change was in the air, and would manifest itself within the next decade.
