16th Conclave • September 1-3, 1932 • Chattanooga, TN |
|
Although many referred to the 1932 Conclave as the “Depression Conclave,” it was actually quite the opposite. Although times were becoming tougher by the day, Sigma Phi Epsilon scheduled its sixteenth Conclave in Chattanooga, Tennessee one year before what many consider the worst year of the depression. With a “galaxy of gay and gladsome girlies,” as one brother described, and a “Honeymoon Barbeque” put on by the University of Tennessee chapter, spirits were buoyant despite darkening clouds. In Conclave business, the position of district governor was created and “SigEp” was adopted as the fraternity’s official nickname. Attendance hovered right around 250 at this Conclave held at Chattanooga’s Signal Mountain Hotel. Paul G. Koontz, Missouri 1924, was elected Grand President.
